Tips to clean baby properly when changing a diaper

We learn through experiences and parenthood teaches us a lot. One crucial part is changing a diaper. As a mother, feeding and changing diapers take up most of our time. Our life revolves around our child and these everyday tasks that are an important part of motherhood. People often assume feeding to be the primary task but maintaining proper hygiene is as important as feeding. A newborn’s little bottom is very delicate and can easily become irritated. Newborn babies require lots of attention and care. We need to change baby diapers up to 6 or 7 times a day, to keep baby rash-free and dry. Changing a diaper may look difficult initially, but with time and some tips, you can take care of the vulnerable skin of the little munchkin with ease.

Here are some tips to clean baby’s skin while changing a diaper.

Things required before changing a diaper

  • Changing sheet if you don’t have a changing station or table.
  • Extra diapers
  • Cotton balls or wipes
  • Baby Wipes
  • Cleansing product
  • Diaper cream / Oil / Ointment
  • Sanitizing wipes or a disinfectant spray (optional)

Tips for proper wiping

  • Changing diaper at regular intervals is really important. Change your baby’s diaper immediately if it's soiled. Make a note that diapers for newborns need to be changed more frequently since they pass urine and stools more often.
  • Please check the size closely, appropriate diaper size is important and should be chosen wisely. If the diaper is too small, it can create rashes, marks and irritation. If the diaper is too big then it may leak easily due to poor fitting.
  • When you’re ready to change your child’s diaper, place her on a changing table or use a clean piece of cloth. Take off the diaper and lift child’s legs so that you reach all areas.
  • Fold the diaper and dispose of it. Empty the garbage regularly to reduce smell and prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Using wipes or cotton balls, gently wipe your child’s bum. Always clean from top to bottom i.e., front to the back for girls and vice versa for boys. Never wipe from bottom to top as it may spread bacteria. You can also use lukewarm water for the same.
  • Once you’ve finished cleaning, properly dry the folds in the skin to prevent infection.
  • Apply lotion or powder on bum (depending on season), avoiding the genitals.
  • Wash your hands well after changing your child’s diaper.
  • Now take the clean diaper and keep it handy. Gently lift the legs and feet and put them in the cut outs for legs. Simply pull up the diaper and make sure it fits well.
  • Completely clean the changing area with a disinfectant spray or a sanitizing wipe.

Precautions

  • If you find any rashes around the area, then leave the baby’s bottom exposed and use the suitable products.
  • Never leave the child alone on the changing table.

FAQ's

Q. How often should I change my newborn’s diaper?

Ans.Newborns usually need a diaper change 6–7 times a day or after every feed. Changing frequently helps prevent rashes, keeps the baby dry, and maintains hygiene. Don’t wait too long after a diaper is soiled, especially during the early months when babies urinate and pass stool more often.

Q. What are the essential items needed for a diaper change?

Ans.Before starting, keep ready: changing sheet or mat, extra diapers, cotton balls or baby wipes, cleansing product, diaper cream or oil, and sanitizing wipes or spray. Having everything at hand makes diaper changing smooth and safe, and prevents you from leaving the baby unattended.

Q. What’s the correct way to clean a baby during a diaper change?

Ans.Use wipes or moist cotton balls and always clean from front to back (especially for girls) to avoid spreading bacteria. For boys, be gentle around the genitals. If possible, use lukewarm water for extra comfort and cleanliness, and dry the skin folds thoroughly afterward.

Q. How can I prevent diaper rashes?

Ans.To avoid rashes, change diapers frequently, choose the right size, and use a diaper rash cream or protective ointment. Allow the baby’s bottom to air dry occasionally, and avoid using harsh products. If rashes appear, leave the area open and consult your pediatrician if it persists.

Q. Why is the right diaper size important?

Ans.A poorly fitted diaper can cause leakage or rashes. A too-tight diaper can lead to skin irritation and red marks, while a loose one might not hold waste properly. Always follow weight-based size recommendations on diaper packaging and switch sizes as your baby grows.

Q. What’s the safest surface to change a diaper on?

Ans.A clean changing table, padded mat, or sanitized cloth sheet is ideal. If you don’t have a changing station, spread a clean towel or sheet. Never leave the baby unattended, and always clean the surface with disinfectant wipes or sprays after every diaper change.

Q. Should I use baby wipes or cotton balls?

Ans.Both are effective. Baby wipes are convenient for outings, while cotton balls with lukewarm water are gentler and ideal for newborns with sensitive skin. Choose fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes to reduce irritation. Make sure to dry the baby’s skin after cleaning to avoid moisture buildup.

Q. Is applying lotion or powder necessary after each change?

Ans.It depends on the season and baby’s skin condition. Use moisturizing lotion in winters to prevent dryness and talc-free powder in humid weather to avoid sweat rashes. Always avoid applying products directly to the genitals. Consult your pediatrician for best recommendations based on your baby’s needs..

Q. Can I change my baby’s diaper while they are asleep?

Ans.If your baby is sleeping peacefully and the diaper is only wet (not soiled), you can wait. But if there’s a poop or risk of leakage, it’s best to gently change it to prevent discomfort or rashes. Use a night light and stay quiet to avoid waking them fully.
