5 pregnancy myths busted

There are so many myths that revolve around pregnancy that can actually make anyone quite confused as to what one should be doing during this time. Add to that the pressure of new information and opinions courtesy the internet and the relatives and friends that the confusion never seems to subside.

Let us bust some of these myths today

You need to eat for two

The whole concept of “Eating for two” is an extremely archaic one in the best-case scenario. You will hear it a number of times that you need to start “Eating for two” since you are expecting now. You will have people gifting you plenty of food items in huge quantities to ensure that you are able to fulfil the food cravings of “both” of you. What you should ideally be doing is during the first and even the second trimester, you should essentially consume the same number of calories that you had been consuming till then without any worries. However, make sure that the calories you do decide to intake are more nutrient rich. In the third trimester it will be a good idea to increase your calorie intake by 200, but change your diet for this increase in calories according to what your doctor tells you.

Morning sickness happens only before noon

Ok, let us just clear this from the get-go. Just because it is called morning sickness doesn’t mean that it will hit you only during the wee hours of the day and prior to 12’ o noon. Morning sickness is pretty much capable of hitting you any time of any day during the first few trimesters of your pregnancy. It can even affect you during dinner time, so don’t assume that you are safe from throwing up post the noon deadline!

One can predict the sex of the baby

We are sure that you must have heard this a lot from a number of people around, you who think that they happen to experts, what your baby’s gender might be by simply looking at the position of your belly or the size of your belly and the many factors that they think makes them experts in this matter. Well, let us tell you one thing, the only way you will be able to tell the sex of your baby will be thanks to your healthcare provider. Of course, this also depends on where you might be residing since sex determination is not legal in every country. So why not just let it remain a surprise and one that you can truly appreciate when the little one does arrive?

Exercising is bad during pregnancy

Do you find yourself avoiding exercising as soon as you find out that you are expecting because you feel that it might, in some way, end up harming your baby? Well, don’t worry too much about that. If you have been someone who has been active and a regular exerciser, then this should not stop you from workout out. Of course, do not experiment with your workout routine and start doing new exercises, instead, stick to your old one. Have a world with your doctor and go through your routine with him/her and get them okayed by them. It is always better to exercise throughout the pregnancy to stay active and to make sure your baby stays healthy too.

Pineapple – The labour inducer

Another archaic belief is that pineapple happens to be a fruit that is quite effective in inducing labour, (for any reason that a mother or the healthcare provider seems to see fit). Try not to suggest pineapple as an alternative to your doctor because you will only be laughed at. This belief came about when it was discovered that pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain that helps stimulate the cervix thus inducing labour. The only problem is that the quantity of bromelain is so little in one pineapple that you might need to consume a ton of it to really do anything. Probably by the end of it, you will only have an upset stomach! We hope that we have been able to bust some common myths that you might have come across during this time of yours and that things have started clearing up slightly. Do not let people talk you into things, and remember to just go according to what your doctor tells you.

FAQ's

Q. Is it true that pregnant women need to eat for two?

Ans.No, the “eat for two” idea is a myth. During the first two trimesters, you only need your usual calorie intake. In the third trimester, an extra 200 calories daily is enough. Focus on nutrient-rich foods instead of overeating for a healthy pregnancy.

Q. Does morning sickness happen only in the morning?

Ans.Despite its name, morning sickness can occur at any time of the day. It may strike in the morning, afternoon, or even at night. Hormonal changes cause nausea and vomiting, especially in the first trimester, and its timing varies from woman to woman.

Q. Can you predict your baby’s gender by belly shape?

Ans.No, the shape or position of your belly cannot reveal your baby’s gender. Gender prediction myths have no scientific basis. The only accurate method is medical testing through your doctor, though in many countries, sex determination during pregnancy is illegal.

Q. Is exercising unsafe during pregnancy?

Ans.Exercise is generally safe and beneficial if approved by your doctor. If you were active before pregnancy, you can usually continue moderate workouts. Avoid new or intense exercises. Staying active helps improve stamina, reduces discomfort, and prepares your body for labor.
