Postnatal Care: Oil Massages for new mothers
Post pregnancy care is one of the most essential things you need to keep in mind when you try to recuperate from the tiring journey that your body has been through! Oil massages are one thing that will really help you feel relaxed and rejuvenated post the rigorous albeit rewarding voyage of yours. Oil massages are excellent when it comes to improving the circulation of blood and relieving sore spots. There are so many oils available in the market that it can be quite difficult to choose which one to pick! But the best part is that all these oils have different properties and thus offer different benefits for you. Here are a few oils that you can choose from:

Sweet Almond Oil:

Almonds are not just great to eat but almond oil is extremely beneficial for your skin too. Since the oil is easily absorbed by our skin it makes for an excellent moisturizer apart from being able to relieve stress and reduce inflammation and muscle pain. Did you know that almond oil also helps in lightening stretch marks? Isn’t that great? The only downside to almond oil is that it is comparatively more expensive oil than other oils available in the market.

Coconut Oil:

You must know that coconut oil is one of the most commonly used oils, especially in South India. Everything from food to skin care routines use some or the other form of coconut oil in them. It is not only great for head massages but also has a brilliantly cooling and hydrating effect on the body. Coconut oil, especially in summers can prove really soothing for your body.

Mustard Oil:

Since mustard oil is considered to be warming for the body, it is one of the first choices when it comes to picking an oil for post pregnancy massages. Heat helps in the healing process of the body and mustard oil also proves great for relieving joint pains and helps in the circulation of blood. Mustard oil is easily available in the market and is also a cheaper alternative. The only minus point about is that it is an extremely thick oil and can be quite difficult to get out of your clothes if they end up getting soaked. What you can do in this regard is that you can set aside particular clothes and a sheet just for this purpose to make sure that only one set of clothing/sheet get stained with the oil.

Sesame Oil:

Sesame oil is another great alternative when it comes to oils for oil massages. According to ayurveda too, sesame oil helps in relieving blood pressure and stress. Again like coconut oil, sesame oil has cooling properties, and can prove to be quite relaxing during the summer time. Though an excellent alternative it is slightly expensive when compared to the likes of Mustard or coconut. When choosing an oil remember to look at what suits you and your little one best. Keep trying different oils on yourself in little patches and look out for any sign of allergies. After you figure out whether the oil suits you or not, you can try it a little on your baby’s skin. If your little one makes a fuss out of the process know that he is obviously irritated with the smell and think about switching oil very seriously. There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when using oils for messages.
  • If you are thinking of using essential or herbal oils, remember to dilute it first since undiluted ones can cause skin irritation
  • Try not to use the oil on your breasts since it comes directly into contact with your baby and can cause allergic reactions for your little one.
  • Testing your oil before using is of the utmost importance. Make sure it doesn’t cause you or your child allergies before proceeding to use it.
Remember to take care of yourself post your pregnancy because if you are healthy then even your baby will turn out to be the healthiest little one ever!
