Couples Yoga for Parenthood

An incredible life changing experience for both the parents, parenting is a journey that really begins the moment one finds out one is pregnant. Although pregnancy is a woman thing and very much about her body, it impacts the man as well and he is likely to feel a gamut of emotions too. It is heartwarming to see the recent emergence of the new involved nurturing dad. This is a to-be-father who accompanies the partner to all medical appointments, ultra sound scans to see the baby growing, and reading up just as much as the expectant mother on pregnancy and birth. A recent trend of attending couple yoga classes and learning yogic techniques of postures, breathing, relaxation, visualization and meditation is a wonderful thing. This can help the couple deal with fluctuating hormones and mood swings and strengthen themselves emotionally to prepare for childbirth. Yoga primarily means Union. A sense of longing to unify ourselves. Pregnancy is in a sense a journey, a union of two to create three. Yoga is unique because we connect the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind, to the rhythm of our breath. The regular practice of relationship yoga by the couple leads to a strong bonding between the couple and the unborn child. This also helps with greater awareness of physical bodies, thoughts and feelings. Couples should talk about everything. Their hopes, dreams, fears, longings, and secret desires, especially in intimate surroundings. This open communication keeps the couple emotionally bonded and boosts their intimacy. Yoga will help in a multitude of things, such as

  • exploring the intuitive connection between parents and the baby
  • the wisdom to share with the baby and
  • also acknowledging the wisdom that the baby shares with them

Practice the act of feeling the baby, by placing hands on partners abdomen gently and feeling the baby kick, or gently massaging the baby. This will help in actively communicating and bonding with the unborn child. It is worth taking a few minutes every day to relax and visualize holding the new baby imagining what he or she might look like and what you might say to them. The body will most likely become much more flexible by doing yoga, and so will your mind. This will help remove irrational fears regarding pregnancy and childbirth. Postures can help increase feelings of trust, peace and friendliness. These feelings help the couple support and relate better with each other. Whatever the practice, the mother’s and baby’s well-being is the ultimate priority. Meditation and conscious breathing can result in a deep and profound connection with the baby inside. It can help the parents with tuning into this boundless energy. It will help in maintaining calm and centeredness throughout the birthing experience. By following techniques of Yoga, an increasing level of personal strength, openness, flexibility and acceptance happens. Awareness and acceptance of one’s own feelings of sadness, anger, and fear can help one stay connected to their partner with an open, caring heart. Becoming mindfully aware of experiences at every moment is what makes the practice of Yoga unique.
