Couples’ Yoga During Pregnancy

Yoga is a Sanskrit word derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" which means to connect, join or balance. At the highest level, it is coming together of individual consciousness with divine consciousness.

Couple here, as I understand are two people who are married or otherwise closely associated romantically or sexually. A union of two people creating a new life.

During the period of pregnancy, doing yoga practices together can create an increasing bond, and a strong support system making the partner sensitive to the changes going on in the mom-to-be.

Most of the times we tend to ignore the emotional state of the dad-to-be through this period.

Doing yoga practices will help both partners become receptive to each other’s feelings.

Asana are done keeping in mind the comfort of the mom, the trimester that she is currently in and her general health condition. It allows the partner to feel safe and supported while doing the asana. Observe that your partner’s touch naturally deepens your breathing, which helps you to release tension and let go.

All of the spinal movements as shown in the pictures below are easy to work on.

Deep squats and wide hip openers with help of partner help prepare for labour

Breathing techniques such as Ujjayi Pranayama (Victory Breath), Nadi Shodhan (alternate nostril) and Bhramari (Bee Pranayama) will help you deal with emotional changes and relax the mind completely

Meditating in seated posture, either facing each other or back-to-back or side by side is helpful. Chanting Mantra together creates harmonious vibrations in and around you.
